A former surgeon arrested on a snowy Italian mountainside after five years on the run was sentenced to seven years in prison Friday for billing insurers and patients for procedures he didn’t perform.
A federal judge imposed a more severe sentence than expected against Mark Weinberger, who ran a nose and sinus clinic in Indiana until he disappeared during a European vacation shortly before he was charged.
Simon also said Weinberger had used his patients as his own personal ATM machine, earning more than $30 million in the three years before he fled.
HIDING OUT: Dr. Mark Weinberger was living in this tent on a snow-covered mountain Italy when police captured him
HIGH LIFE: Weingberer and wife Michelle lived a lavish life of tropical vacations, yachting, and five-story townhouses.
