11/02/12 – TULSA, OK — Eighteen-year-old Brittany Phillips was a student who was taking courses at Tulsa Community College and was days away from her 19th birthday. She was described as a bubbly, happy person who had no known enemies, the type of girl who always kept in contact with family and friends and was always responsible, taking her school work seriously. So it was surprising when she suddenly stopped showing up to TCC and couldn’t be reached by phone.

On October 1, 2004, after a couple days of missed classes, a concerned friend decided to stop over Brittany’s apartment at Union Apartments, where she was living alone. She walked into a horrifying scene, Brittany’s decomposing body. She had been laying there for several days.

The last time anyone had contact with Brittany was on the evening of September 27, 2004. Sometime during the late-night hours of 09/27/04 and the early-morning hours of 09/28/04, an unidentified man was in her apartment. It is unknown if he was invited in or broke in. She was assaulted, raped and then strangled to death and he left her bruised and battered body lying on her bed in her second floor apartment.

October 4, 2004, Brittany’s nineteenth birthday, was suppose to be a day of celebration but instead, her family and friends were attending her funeral.

Since her murder, authorities have interviewed MANY people and have compared thousands of DNA with no luck.

Brittany’s mother, Maggie Zingman, was left devastated and was determined to find her daughters killer.

Maggie is a trauma psychologist, a trauma survivor and a “mom on a mission doing a labor of love.”

Every few months Maggie focuses on looking for her daughter’s killer. She drives her third Caravan to Catch a Killer SUV covered with pictures of her deceased daughter and facts about her brutal rape and murder. People are drawn to her SUV by its moving billboard while she shares her story of Brittany’s short, but gifted life. She also discusses the facts surrounding Brittany’s murder in the hope that she will eventually receive a tip that may lead to the killer and that lessons may be learned from the issues that impede her daughter’s investigation.

She has also driven more than 13,000 miles to conduct media interviews and meet with local homicide departments, government officials, and community leaders. She hopes that by receiving national coverage, she will help improve current rape laws and raise awareness about how DNA backlogs and justice issues related to rape affect the occurrence of murders such as Brittany’s and impede investigations. She credits law enforcement and volunteers in Tulsa, Oklahoma for having helped in her daughter’s investigation and also the companies who have helped raise awareness for the cause and promote the Caravan to Catch a Killer, such as LAMAR Advertising and Midwest Wraps/Fellers Vinyl. Maggie remains on a mission to bring her daughter’s killer to justice.
