Desi Woods is wanted for homicide.

On September 26, 2010 police discovered the body of 68-year-old Irene Camacho, a former deli cashier/clerk at Barstow Stater Bros, where she was employed for over 30 years. She had been strangled to death at her own home on Piute Street in Barstow, CA.

The suspect would soon be identified as Desi Woods, then 36, the son of the murdered woman. He had strangled Camacho to death after a heated argument between the two erupted. After the murder he fled.

Camacho’s fiance had gone over her home the following morning because he was concerned that she wasn’t answering his phone calls. That’s when he discovered her body and contacted police.

The District Attorney’s office had charged Woods with his mother’s murder and a warrant was issued for his arrest but despite numerous attempts to locate him, he remains on the run.

Police are also working with U.S. marshals to locate Woods and have followed many tips that lead to dead ends. They’re hoping someone comes forward with valuable information.

“It’s bizarre,” said Barstow Police Detective Daniel Arthur. “With his lifestyle … I really thought he would have some kind of run in with law enforcement by now, but he hasn’t. So it’s frustrating.”

Their have been sightings, many with mistaken identity and most are unconfirmed including witnesses claiming to have seen Wood’s driving a green 1970’s pick-up truck.

Woods, who was also residing in Barstow, was diagnosed as a paranoid Schizophrenic. Police describe him as a violent drunk and drug user who uses heroin and methamphetamine regularly.

America’s Most Wanted aired this case on October 12, 2012, two years after a warrant had been sent out for his capture.

“The victim was a staple in the town she grew up in. She knew everyone in town. And it was an extremely unfortunate circumstance for Irene because the suspect is one of her sons.” said Jim Gagliano, producer of AMW.

If you have any information regarding the whereabouts of Desi Woods you’re urged to please contact: Barstow Police Department (760) 256-2211

BYRON SMITH: Murder or Self Defence?

Byron Smith (center) and the teens he shot — Haile Kifer (left) and her cousin Nicholas Brady (right).

According to 64-year-old retired State Department worker Byron Smith, two Little Falls teens broke into his rural home on the Mississippi River when he shot and killed them in self-defense. He then let the bodies sit in his house for more than a day before authorities, following up on a suspicious vehicle report, came to Smith’s home and he told them about what happened.

The criminal complaint says that Smith shot the two as they came down his basement stairs several minutes apart on Thanksgiving Day. The complaint adds that he shot them numerous times – each in the head after already critically wounding them.

He then waited a day before asking a neighbor to alert authorities, the document added.

According to Smith, his home was burlarized on multiple occasions (eight) and he believes the teens had something to do with atleast a few.

Smith told investigators he shot Schaeffel as he walked down the stairs, then shot him again in the face as he lay on the floor looking at him.

“I want him dead,” Smith told police.

Smith said he sat down in a chair when Kifer started walking down the steps. Smith shot her and she also fell down the stairs. He tried to shoot her a second time, but his rifle jammed. When the gun jammed, Kifer laughed at him, fueling his anger.

“If you’re trying to shoot somebody and they laugh at you, you go again,” he told police.

Smith told police he then shot Kifer “more times than I needed to” in the chest, leaving her gasping for air. He ended her suffering with a “good, clean finishing shot” under her chin.

“Smith acknowledged leaving the bodies in his home overnight before calling a neighbor to ask about a lawyer and to request that authorities be notified,” the Strib reports.

Authorities having been searching for Jason Derek Brown, 43, who has been on the run since late 2004 when he shot an armored car guard and fled with stolen money in Phoenix, Arizona, right outside of a Phoenix movie theater.

Immediately after being named the suspect in the homicide, Brown fled Phoenix and went to Henderson, Nevada and later travelled to Las Vegas. While there, he had swapped his BMW for a black Escalade. In January, 2005, authorities found Brown’s Cadillac Escalade abandoned in the parking lot of Portland International Airport in Oregon.

The one-time Salt Lake City resident and Laguna Beach native who attended Laguna Beach High School, could now be taking advantage of Mormon church members to stay hidden from public view, the FBI’s lead agent on the case said.

Although Brown is described as a ‘show off’ who likes to party, authorities believe he could be hiding among the Mormon and say he is a ‘skilled liar’ who has a ‘surfer dude’  appearance and a common name which could help him easily blend in among a crowd. He also speaks fluent French and is a former Mormon who once served LDS mission in France.

On December 8, 2007, three years after his first degree murder charge, Brown was listed on FBI’s Most Wanted List as the 489th Most Wanted fugitive and FBI has been looking for him ever since. It’s now 2013 and the Federal Bureau of Investigation has now upgraded him to FBI’s Top 10 Most Wanted Fugitives.

In 2005, less than one year after the murder, authorities received over 200 leads with the majority of leads being outside of Arizona, even some possible sightings in Canada. Most of the sightings haven’t been confirmed however, if it is then he could be on the move in any state.

The most recent confirmed sighting was in August 2008, when an acquaintance of Brown recognized him while they were stopped at a traffic light near Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City. Their mutual recognition prompted Brown to drive through the stoplight. Aware that Brown was a fugitive, the witness informed police of the sighting. According to him, Brown had longer hair and a deeper tan than in the 2004 photograph of his wanted poster. Brown is considered armed and extremely dangerous and those with a possible sighting should contact police immediately and avoid confronting Brown themself.

11/17/12, NYC — Authorities say a New York City boutique owner was shot to death in the head Friday night with the same gun that killed two other shopkeepers in the same borough over the summer. Ballistics tests matched in each killing, all of which occurred in Brooklyn shops with an ‘8’ in the address. The Daily News reports that the shop owner Vahidipour Rahmatollah of Great Neck was behind the counter of She She in Brooklyn’s Flatbush section when he was shot Friday night.

BoutiqueScene: Police believe the killer may have been casing the shop, as it had no security cameras to catch him in the act

The gunman dragged the victim’s body toward the back of the store and covered it with clothing.  Police found the 78-year-old with two gunshot wounds to the head and one to the torso, DNA Info reported.

When he didn’t come home at the usual time his family called the police, who discovered his body. It wasn’t not clear if the killer actually took anything, or if the murder was his sole motivation. ‘He never had in his whole life one enemy, he didn’t have, he was a very kind man,’ his sobbing wife, Naima Rahmatollan, told reporters.  Saturday he was supposed to be at his grandson’s Bar Mitzvah. Police believe the murderer had been watching the store in preparation for the attack, noting that he’d chosen a shop with no security cameras. The other two merchants were killed July 6 and Aug. 2 with the same .22-caliber gun. Mohammed Gebeli, 65, was shot to death at his clothing store at 7718 Fifth Ave. and Issac Kadare, 59, was found dead in his Bensonhurst store at 1877 86th St.  No one has been arrested in any of the killings.

Marked for death: Brett Hartman claims he had nothing to do with the brutal 1997 murder of Winda Snipes in Akron, Ohio

Pictured: Bret Hartman Akron, Ohio Death Row Inmate set to die tonight

Ohio is set to execute a man on Tuesday who claims he is innocent of stabbing a woman 138 times, slitting her throat and cutting off her hands.

Brett Hartman, a convicted killer who admitted to having sex with Winda Snipes early on the morning of Sept. 9, 1997 at her Akron apartment, claims that when he went back to Snipes’ apartment later that day, found her mutilated body and panicked before trying to clean up the mess and calling 911.

While Hartman still maintains his innocence, he has been found guilty by numerous courts over the years.

According to the Associated Press, the U.S. Supreme Court denied a last-minute appeal by Hartman on Monday.

Reports indicate that the convicted killer asked the high court on his appeal that he be allowed to renew arguments that his original attorneys did a bad job presenting evidence that could have led a jury to spare him.

Hartman came within about a week of execution in 2009 before federal courts allowed him to pursue an innocence claim. The claim failed before he had a new date set last year. That date was eventually postponed due to a federal lawsuit over Ohio’s execution policy.

Three separate efforts for clemency on Hartman’s part have been denied by the Ohio Parole Board, which cited the brutality of the Snipes’ slaying and the “overwhelming evidence” of Hartman’s guilt.

A long held argument by Hartman’s attorneys has been that crucial evidence from the crime scene and Snipes’ body both have never been tested. The argument essentially raises questions about Hartman’s innocence.

According to the AP, the evidence includes fingerprints allegedly found on a clock and a mop handle. Hartman also argues the evidence could implicate an alternate suspect.

The AP further reports that Hartman’s attorneys say their clients behavior in prison has been exemplary and shows he is a changed man. They cite his devotion to religious studies, his development as an artist and community service projects in prison.

Hartman would be the 49th inmate put to death since Ohio resumed executions in 1999.

The death row inmate slept for about three hours early Tuesday, spoke on the phone with a friend, then visited with an aunt, a sister and another friend Tuesday morning, prisons spokeswoman JoEllen Smith told reporters.

He ate most of his last meal Monday, including steak, baked potato and fried shrimp, then declined breakfast Tuesday, Smith said.

11/12/12, TEXAS — Thirty-four alleged members of the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas gang (ABT), including four of its most senior leaders, have been indicted by a federal grand jury in Houston for allegedly conspiring to participate in a racketeering enterprise, announced Assistant Attorney General Lanny A. Breuer of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, U.S. Attorney Kenneth Magidson of the Southern District of Texas, Special Agent in Charge Melvin D. King of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and FBI Special Agent in Charge Stephen L. Morris.

The 17-count superseding indictment was returned by a federal grand jury on Oct. 22, 2012, and unsealed on Friday, Nov. 9, in U.S. District Court in the Southern District of Texas. Fourteen individuals were taken into custody and 15 defendants charged in the superseding indictment are already in custody. Five defendants remain at large.

“Today’s takedown represents a devastating blow to the leadership of ABT,” said Breuer. “Four ABT generals, 13 additional alleged ABT leaders and numerous other gang members and associates are named in the indictment. As charged, ABT uses extreme violence and threats of violence to maintain internal discipline and retaliate against those believed to be cooperating with law enforcement. Through violence and intimidation, ABT allegedly exerts control over prison populations and neighborhoods, and instills fear in those who come in contact with its members. As today’s operations show, the Criminal Division, working closely with its federal, state and local law enforcement partners, is determined to continue disrupting and dismantling ABT and other violent, criminal gangs.”

This indictment is the culmination of a joint federal, state and local law enforcement effort targeting a large-scale prison gang involved in violent organized crime,” said Magidson. “Only when we work in partnership utilizing all our resources can we attack a criminal organization and dismantle it entirely.”

“ATF is serious about fighting violent crime. We remain steadfast in our commitment to focus on those violent criminals who illegally use firearms to prey on their victims,” said King. “Through a collective effort with our law enforcement partners this operation was a success today.”

“This multi-year investigation and indictment clearly targets the worst-of-the-worst among the ABT,” said Morris. “This effort not only exemplifies the level of effort the FBI and our law enforcement partners will expend to prevent prison gang racism and criminal activity from poisoning our communities. It sends a clear message that we will relentlessly pursue and prosecute the leaders and members of these criminal enterprises regardless of where they lay their heads.”

As charged, the defendants range from senior leaders to soldiers of the ABT, a “whites only,” prison-based gang with members operating inside and outside of state and federal prisons throughout Texas and elsewhere in the United States since at least the early 1980s.

According to court documents, the ABT has a detailed and uniform organizational structure, with territory divided into five regions, each run by a “general.” The superseding indictment charges four generals, Terry Ross Blake, 55, aka “Big Terry;” Larry Max Bryan, 51, aka “Slick;” William David Maynard, 42, aka “Baby Huey;” and Charles Lee Roberts, 68, aka “Jive,” with conspiracy to participate in the racketeering activities of the ABT, among other charges.

In total, the superseding indictment charges 34 alleged members of the ABT with conspiracy to participate in the racketeering activities of the ABT. Alleged members of the ABT are also charged with involvement in three murders, multiple attempted murders, kidnappings, assaults and conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and cocaine.

According to the superseding indictment, the ABT was established in the early 1980s within the Texas prison system. The gang modeled itself after and adopted many of the precepts and writings of the Aryan Brotherhood, a California-based prison gang that was formed in the California prison system during the 1960s. According to court documents, previously, the ABT was primarily concerned with the protection of white inmates and white supremacy/separatism. Over time, the ABT is alleged to have has expanded its criminal enterprise to include illegal activities for profit.

Court documents allege the ABT enforced its rules and promoted discipline among its members, prospects and associates through murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to murder, arson, assault, robbery and threats against those who violate the rules or pose a threat to the enterprise. Members, and oftentimes associates, were required to follow the orders of higher-ranking members, often referred to as “direct orders.”

According to the superseding indictment, in order to be considered for membership, a person must be sponsored by another ABT member. Once sponsored, a prospective member must serve an unspecified term, during which he is referred to as a prospect, while his conduct is observed by the members of the ABT.

Ten defendants have been charged with offenses that are eligible for the death penalty. The remaining 24 defendants face a maximum penalty of life in prison.

This case is being investigated by a multi-agency task force consisting of the ATF, Drug Enforcement Administration, FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, Federal Bureau of Prisons, Homeland Security Investigations, Texas Rangers, Texas Department of Public Safety, and Texas Department of Criminal Justice – Office of Inspector General as well as sheriff’s offices in Harris, Montgomery, Orange, Tarrant, Atascosa and Waller Counties, police departments in Houston, Baytown, Fort Worth, San Antonio, Carrollton and Alvin, and district attorney’s Offices in Harris, Montgomery, Atascosa and Kaufman Counties.

The case is being prosecuted by David Karpel of the Criminal Division’s Organized Crime and Gang Section and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Hileman of the Southern District of Texas.

Pictured; Brittany Phillips

11/02/12 – TULSA, OK — Eighteen-year-old Brittany Phillips was a student who was taking courses at Tulsa Community College and was days away from her 19th birthday. She was described as a bubbly, happy person who had no known enemies, the type of girl who always kept in contact with family and friends and was always responsible, taking her school work seriously. So it was surprising when she suddenly stopped showing up to TCC and couldn’t be reached by phone.

On October 1, 2004, after a couple days of missed classes, a concerned friend decided to stop over Brittany’s apartment at Union Apartments, where she was living alone. She walked into a horrifying scene, Brittany’s decomposing body. She had been laying there for several days.

The last time anyone had contact with Brittany was on the evening of September 27, 2004. Sometime during the late-night hours of 09/27/04 and the early-morning hours of 09/28/04, an unidentified man was in her apartment. It is unknown if he was invited in or broke in. She was assaulted, raped and then strangled to death and he left her bruised and battered body lying on her bed in her second floor apartment.

October 4, 2004, Brittany’s nineteenth birthday, was suppose to be a day of celebration but instead, her family and friends were attending her funeral.

Since her murder, authorities have interviewed MANY people and have compared thousands of DNA with no luck.

Brittany’s mother, Maggie Zingman, was left devastated and was determined to find her daughters killer.

Maggie is a trauma psychologist, a trauma survivor and a “mom on a mission doing a labor of love.”

Every few months Maggie focuses on looking for her daughter’s killer. She drives her third Caravan to Catch a Killer SUV covered with pictures of her deceased daughter and facts about her brutal rape and murder. People are drawn to her SUV by its moving billboard while she shares her story of Brittany’s short, but gifted life. She also discusses the facts surrounding Brittany’s murder in the hope that she will eventually receive a tip that may lead to the killer and that lessons may be learned from the issues that impede her daughter’s investigation.

Caravan to Catch a Killer

Photo of Maggie’s Caravan ”to catch a killer,” which is made to draw attention with hopes that some day the right person will see it and remember and/or say something.

She has also driven more than 13,000 miles to conduct media interviews and meet with local homicide departments, government officials, and community leaders. She hopes that by receiving national coverage, she will help improve current rape laws and raise awareness about how DNA backlogs and justice issues related to rape affect the occurrence of murders such as Brittany’s and impede investigations. She credits law enforcement and volunteers in Tulsa, Oklahoma for having helped in her daughter’s investigation and also the companies who have helped raise awareness for the cause and promote the Caravan to Catch a Killer, such as LAMAR Advertising and Midwest Wraps/Fellers Vinyl. Maggie remains on a mission to bring her daughter’s killer to justice.
